- Formulas recalculate
This is for small repairs: a wrong quantity in a price list, a typo in a name, a few extra rows. Your original file is never changed. You download a new copy.
Example: fixing a price list
We opened a price list where the total column is a formula (=B2*C2) and a Sum row adds the totals.
| Before | After | |
|---|---|---|
| Pens: quantity | 10 | 20 |
| Pens: total (formula) | 25 | 50 |
| Sum (formula) | 52.75 | 77.75 |
- Turn on editingClick Edit this sheet.
- Change the cellDouble-click the Pens quantity, type 20, and press Enter. The Pens total and the Sum change as soon as you press Enter.
- Save a copyClick Save .xlsx. The file downloads as
price-edited.xlsx.
We then opened the saved file with a separate program. The quantity was 20, the formula was still =B2*C2 (not pasted as a number) with the value 50, and the Sum was 77.75.
What is kept when you save
| Kept in the saved copy | Not promised, so check it in Excel |
|---|---|
| Formulas, with their recalculated values | Borders, Excel tables, conditional formatting |
| Bold and other fonts, fill colours | Data validation and print settings |
| Column widths, merged cells, frozen panes | Charts and pictures are shown but cannot be edited |
| The first row of headings you edit | A deleted column of an Excel table becomes a plain range; a password is not kept |
In our example the bold yellow header, the column width and the frozen top row all survived. Fonts and fills from your file are kept; the editor has no tools of its own for changing fonts, colours or borders.
What you can do while editing
- Type, paste and clear cells; edit column headings.
- Insert and delete rows and columns, except columns on a sheet with pictures or charts.
- Fill down with the button or Ctrl+D (Cmd+D on a Mac); formulas adjust row by row.
- Find and replace across the sheet with Ctrl+H, then undo it in one step. Undo and redo with Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Y.
- Keep several files open in tabs, each with its own edits.
Editing is off in the phone card view, so use a larger screen. Just want to look at a file? Use the XLSX opener. Want the data in another program? Convert it to CSV. Edits are kept in your browser so a refresh does not lose them; the offline and privacy guide says exactly where.
How we tested this
On 31 October 2026 we ran the live page in headless Chromium on a Linux cloud server, driving it the way a person would (adding files, clicking the buttons, saving the download) and checking the files it produced.
| What we checked | Result |
|---|---|
| After the edit, the formula cells and the Sum recalculate on screen | 1 of 1 |
| In the saved file: new quantity, formula kept as a formula, its value 50, Sum 77.75 | 4 of 4 |
| In the saved file: bold header, fill colour, frozen top row, column width | 4 of 4 |
| No page errors | 1 of 1 |
| Total | 10 of 10 |
Not tested: Charts, pictures, conditional formatting, data validation and Excel tables in the saved file, large files, and functions such as XLOOKUP, which keep their saved value here and are recalculated when you open the saved file in Excel.
Frequently asked questions
Is my file uploaded when I edit it?
No. Editing happens in your browser and nothing is sent to a server. So a refresh does not lose your work, your edits and their History are also kept in your browser’s own storage on this device. Clear data, beside the Save button, or Clear saved data in the ⋯ menu removes them, and offers to download your edited file first.
Will my formatting survive when I save?
Formulas, fonts, fill colors, column widths, merged cells and frozen panes from your file are kept in the saved copy. Charts and pictures are shown but cannot be edited here, so check them in Excel after saving. Borders, tables, conditional formatting, data validation and print settings are not promised, so check those too. If you delete a column from an Excel table, it becomes a plain range when saved, and a password-protected file is saved without its password.
Do formulas recalculate?
Yes, for most common functions, as soon as you change a cell. Formulas that came without a saved result, such as in a file written by a script, are calculated when the file opens. A few functions, such as XLOOKUP, keep their saved value here and are recalculated when you open the saved file in Excel.
Can I go back to an earlier version of my edits?
Yes. Undo and Redo step through your edits. History lists your last 40 changes with the old and new value, and Go back to here returns the sheet to that point after you confirm. Your state before going back is kept as a restore point that History can put back.
Can I insert or delete columns?
Yes. While editing, use + Column left, + Column right or Delete column(s). Formulas, merged cells, column widths and hidden columns move with the columns, and Undo reverses it. Not on a sheet that has pictures or charts yet, because they can’t move with columns; you can still insert and delete rows there.
Can I edit on a phone?
Not when the sheet is shown as cards. The Edit this sheet button stays visible but is switched off, with a note asking for a wider screen. Use a larger screen, or rotate your device, to edit.
Does it work offline?
Yes. After your first visit the editor opens files with no internet connection. The first time you save an edited .xlsx, one small extra library is fetched from this site, then saving works offline too.
Where to go next
- To only read a file, open it without Excel and keep the original untouched.
- When the edits are done, make a PDF copy to send.
- For a plain-text version of one sheet, convert it to CSV.
