An XLSX reader opens Excel workbooks without Microsoft Excel. Use it when a file arrives by email and you need to read it or make a quick fix, on a Chromebook, a laptop, or a computer without Office. On a phone you can read, search and sort it.

Which page do you need?

This page is the full viewer. If you know what you want to do with the file, these pages start from that job:

How it works

  1. Drop your fileDrag it onto the page, or click the drop area and choose it. Nothing is uploaded.
  2. Look aroundPick a sheet, search, sort, filter, zoom, or go full screen. Click any cell to see its full value or formula.
  3. Take it with youExport the view as CSV, XLSX, HTML or JSON, print it, or edit it and save a copy.

What you can do

Open

Every common format

Excel (.xlsx .xls .xlsm .xlsb), OpenDocument (.ods), CSV, TSV and dBase files. Open several at once, each in its own tab.

Find

Search, sort and filter

Search every column, filter each column by its values, sort with one click, highlight duplicate rows and freeze the first columns.

See

Colors, charts and pictures

Cell colors, conditional formatting, pictures and bar or line charts from the file are shown, so a report still looks like a report.

Big

Large sheets stay smooth

Files are read in the background and only visible rows are drawn. See the measured speeds.

Edit

Change cells, keep a copy

Change cells, add rows, and save a new .xlsx. The original is never touched. How editing works.

Save

Take it with you

Export what you see as CSV, XLSX, HTML or JSON, or print it as a PDF. Exports follow your current filter and sort, and hidden rows are left out. Hidden columns are left out of CSV, HTML and JSON.

Lock

Password-protected files

Excel 2010 and newer files unlock in your browser. The password never leaves your device and is never stored.

Back

Still there when you return

Your tabs, sheet, filters, zoom and any edits are remembered in this browser. Close a tab, or use Clear data, to erase them.

Is it really private?

Your spreadsheet is opened by code running in your own browser. It is not uploaded, copied to a server or shared. The reader and the spreadsheet library are served from this site, not a third party.

To keep your tabs between visits, they are saved in your browser’s own storage on this device. Clear data, beside the Save button, or Clear saved data in the ⋯ menu removes all of it, including your edits and History. The original files on your device are never touched. See how to verify this yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Is it really private?

Yes. Your spreadsheet is read on your own device and is never sent to a server. To keep your tabs between visits, the viewer saves them in your browser’s own storage. Your edits and their History are kept there too. Clear data, beside the Save button, or Clear saved data in the ⋯ menu, deletes everything it saved.

Does it work offline?

Yes. After your first visit the viewer opens files with no internet connection. The offline guide shows how to test it with airplane mode.

Which file types can it open?

.xlsx, .xls, .xlsm, .xlsb, .ods, .csv, .tsv and .dbf, plus a few older text-based formats (.dif, .slk, .prn, .txt). For the old binary formats, see the XLS viewer page.

Does it show colors, charts and pictures?

Yes, within limits. It shows cell fill colors and column widths, conditional formatting such as color scales, data bars and icon sets, pictures, and bar and line charts. Pictures and charts appear in a strip above the grid and are read-only. Fonts and borders are not drawn on screen, although fonts and fills from your file are kept when you save an edited copy. Other chart types such as pie or scatter are listed but not drawn.

Can it open a password-protected file?

Yes, for files protected in Excel 2010 or newer. You type the password in your browser, it is used there to unlock the file, and it is never sent anywhere or saved. Older Excel 2007 encryption and encrypted .xls files are not supported.

Can I edit a spreadsheet and save it?

Yes. Click Edit this sheet, change cells, and use Save .xlsx to download a copy. The original file is never changed. Formulas recalculate. The editing guide lists what is kept in the saved copy and what is not.

How big a file can it open?

Sheets of up to 300,000 rows. A big .xlsx shows its first rows within a few seconds while the rest loads. See the timings for 100,000 and 300,000 rows, and what to do beyond that.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Sheets with up to 10 columns appear as easy-to-scroll cards. Wider sheets stay as a table with the first column frozen, so you always know which row you are reading. Sheets shown as cards cannot be edited: the Edit button stays visible but is switched off and says it needs a wider screen. Rotate your device or use a larger screen to edit.
